50 WEEE collected through their own shops
ECOTIC team welcomed the Altex and Media Galaxy initiative to offer a discount for the hand over of a used equipment at the purchase of a new one. We were surprised by the avalanche of daily takeover orders on refrigerators and washing machines. Due to the large volume of equipment, many stores were equipped with large containers for temporary storage.
The campaign started last June this year and was originally designed to have a duration of 3 months but given the success enjoyed Altex decided to continue this campaign until at least the end of the year. The amount collected in 2013 is of approx 3,000 tons of WEEE consisting of over 50,000 old refrigerators and washing machines.
All these equipment have been taken over for their management by ECOTIC and were transferred to the treatment operator Greenweee International, Buzau. With the entry of such equipment into the treatment process, significant quantities of pollutants (CFC and PCB-capacitors) were extracted from the waste thus avoiding their elimination in the environment.
Another benefit of this campaign is the considerable volumes of secondary raw materials such as iron, copper and plastic, which will be used in various manufacturing processes.
Through these actions, Altex contributed to consumer awareness and these wastes do not get in uncontrolled scrap flows or abandoned in vacant areas, with negative effects on the environment. Altex CSR policy includes other types of actions, such as providing to consume the possibility to dispose of waste battery collection throughout their network, raising awareness both on website and on Facebook, and other more.
