ECOTIC REPORTS 100 TONS OF ELECTRIC WASTE COLLECTED

ECOTIC, the first collective scheme in the field of WEEE collection and recycling (waste of electrical and electronic equipment) in Romania, reaches the threshold of 100,000 tons of WEEE collected and introduced in the recycling flow, during its 10 years of activity (April 30th 2007 - June 30th 2017).

In 2006, ECOTIC becomes the first organization of EEE producers and importers in Romania. ECOTIC manages Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) on behalf of more than 600 affiliated producers and importers, ensuring and supervising the entire take-back, transportation, dismantling and recycling process so that WEEE is no longer a threat.

ECOTIC's activities are motivated by the need to protect the environment and align to the standards and legislative requirements of the European Union. The electrical equipment contains substances that, unless neutralized, become harmful to the environment and human health. The recycling process must be performed at standards that ensure a high level of efficiency in recovering secondary raw materials and in protecting the environment. Starting with 2017, Romania has a mandatory WEEE collection target of 45% of the new equipment put on the market.

This is the context that determines ECOTIC's actions - developing a collection infrastructure with national coverage, as well as implementing communication projects and campaigns that raise people's awareness regarding selective collection of waste. Thus, after 10 years of activity, ECOTIC's reports show an important figure: 100,000 tons of WEEE collected.

This is an important threshold, which proves that the process of waste collection and recycling is significantly improving in Romania, that there are organizations, institutions and authorities which have understood the stake of these processes for the current and next generations.
