On Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at the National Theater in Bucharest, the "CIRCULAR" conference took place, an event organized by Green Report, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests.
The circular economy is a little known concept in Romania, but intensely debated during this period in the European Parliament. This is also the challenge of the 21st century: an economy based on reducing the consumption of energy and raw materials, in which the resulting waste has precise destinations from the design phase, by integrating them into the cyclical spiral of reuse.
By 2020, Romania must recycle 50% of its waste. Currently, 3% is recycled.
Romania ranks 6th in Europe in terms of the amount of waste produced annually, according to the latest Eurostat study, from 2014, with a total of 11 tons of waste generated per capita. According to Eurostat, a Romanian produces, on average, just under a kilogram of garbage per day. Currently, about 90% of this amount reaches landfills, wasting valuable resources.
Romania recycled, in 2013, only 3% of municipal waste, being on the last place in the European Union, while 97% of them ended up in landfills. On several occasions, European officials have expressed concern that Romania does not protect its citizens from the effects of poor waste management. From here to Romania's entry into infringement is only one step. Moreover, by 2020, our country must fully comply with European legislation and recycle 50% of municipal waste.
This conference was attended by the President of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament, Giovanni LA VIA; Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests, Gratiela Gavrilescu; the president of the Commission for Environment and Ecological Balance of the Romanian Parliament, Carmen Moldovan; the mayor of Oradea and the executive president of the Association of Romanian Municipalities, Ilie Bolojan; representatives of the National Bank of Romania, of the authorities with a role in the field of environmental protection and of the business environment, of the waste generating companies, but also of those involved in the sanitation, collection and recycling processes. ECOTIC joined this initiative, being a partner of the conference.
