Visit of European Commission delegation regarding environmental issues

During 29 and 30 January 2015, a delegation of the European Commission - DG Environment - traveled to Bucharest to assess the situation of waste management in Romania. 

The delegation met with representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, NEPA and organizations of producers and operators of waste market. From ECOTIC participated Valentin Negoita - President and Dragos Calugaru - CEO.

The discussions focused on evaluating the results recorded by Romania in recent years in the management of household waste and other types of waste, the existing problems in achieving collection targets and objectives assumed by Romania as a Member State of the European Union.

In dialogue with the EC delegation, representatives of manufacturers in the field of WEEE and packaging revealed both its achievements in information and public awareness as well as problems encountered in the daily activities such as:

• Poor involvement of local authorities in waste management;

• Parallel trade of electrical and electronic equipment waste;

• Awareness of the population is still low compared to environmental issues

• Low cooperation between producers and local authorities (municipalities) in the national interest activities such as the provision of infrastructure for collection, and information and awareness activities

At the proposal of the European Commission representatives dialogue with the Romanian authorities, collective organizations of producers and operators of waste management will continue in the coming months.
